Liam O’Dell is an award-winning freelance journalist and campaigner specialising in deafness, disability and social media. He is a regular writer for the Deaf news blog The Limping Chicken, The Independent and indy100. His work has also been featured in The Stage, Business Insider, BBC Science Focus, The Verge, The Guardian and Metro.co.uk.
Liam is a Deaf hearing aid user who is dyspraxic, autistic and has Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD). He also identifies as asexual, an LGBTQ+ identity which means he experiences little to no sexual attraction.
In November 2017, Liam delivered his first ever TEDx talk at the TEDxBrayfordPool event in Lincoln, titled ‘How to control your labels, and when to let them define you‘.
A former presenter for Lincoln’s first community radio station, Siren Radio, Liam also has a background in broadcast journalism and digital engagement. His time at the station saw him host breakfast programme The Morning Report as well as his own Saturday morning entertainment show, Brunchtime.
As he entered his final year at Siren Radio, he also produced and co-presented his own election results programme. Local Election Live followed the 2017 City of Lincoln Council elections and featured interviews with candidates across the political spectrum, including the council leader and the local Member of Parliament.
Later that year, Liam won the Young Freelancer Award from the Association of Independent Professionals and the Self-Employed (IPSE) for his work on the #WhereIsTheInterpreter campaign, which challenged the UK Government on its failure to provide an in-person British Sign Language (BSL) interpreter for its coronavirus press conferences. He was also nominated in the COVID-19 Success Story category.
Alongside writing, Liam produces content for his own YouTube channel and is a public speaker, having moderated panels at Summer in the City, the Almeida Theatre’s Shifting Tides festival and the UK Asexuality Conference.
Liam is available to hire and for commission for writing, broadcast, content creation and public speaking opportunities. Get in touch today to discuss rates and how he can work with you.
